Text, Talk, Set to Go!

A youth initiative on college planning and being emotionally ready for the transition to college

SSWAA has been invited to share an important resource with our members.

The JED Foundation recently conducted a “First-Year College Experience” survey, exploring the challenges associated with young adults’ transition from high school to college. Among other findings, the study found that the majority of US first-year college students feel underprepared emotionally for college – 60% wish they had gotten more help with emotional preparation for college.

The poll also found that emotional preparedness – defined as the ability to take care of oneself, adapt to new environments, manage negative emotions or behavior and build positive relationships – is a major contributor to students’ success during their first year of college.

Text, Talk, Set to Go uses text messaging to facilitate a face-to-face conversation on preparedness for college. Participants gather in small groups (3-4 people) with one cell phone per group. They text SetToGo to the number 89800 to receive a series of text messages that guides their group through a conversation on the transition to college: why it is important, how to prepare for it, and how to set an action plan to to promote success in college. The text messages include videos, social media interactions, polling questions and discussion questions.

Previous participants have found that the Text, Talk platform is fun, flexible, easy, convenient and leads to meaningful conversations that build peer understanding and support. An independent evaluation found that participating in the Text, Talk platform leads to an increase in participants’ understanding and comfort level in talking about the content, likeliness to seek additional information and likeliness to implement information or skills.

Please help us continue to add more youth voices to a conversation that has the power to emotionally prepare incoming college students and ensure they have more of a chance to be successful through their transition to college.
